Morning Glories: Vanska Returns

St. Paul, Minn. — It's quite a week for Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra. Vänskä will return as the Orchestra's music director, as of May 1. And together, they'll be performing at the newly remodeled Northrop Auditorium, recreating the very first concert given at Northrop in 1929.

That concert is sold out, but we'll bring you a live broadcast, Friday, May 2, at 8 p.m. And all this week, we'll bring you five Morning Glories, spanning a decade of performances by conductor and orchestra.

Monday

Beethoven: Symphony No. 7
There's lots of competition when it comes to Beethoven symphonies — but the Minnesota recordings won international acclaim.

Tuesday

Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No. 2
Vänskä and the Orchestra partnered with Stephen Hough in this finger-buster of a concerto.

Wednesday

Grieg: Peer Gynt Suite
Osmo Vänskä was a guest with the Minnesota Orchestra when this recording was made, in 2002.

Thursday

Sibelius: Symphony No. 1
Earlier this year, this disc won the Grammy for Best Orchestral Performance.

Friday

Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 24
The most recent release from Vänskä and the Orchestra — the soloist is pianist Yevgeny Sudbin.
