Interview: Evan Shinners

by Alison Young, Minnesota Public Radio

St. Paul, Minn. — He's a Bach star: Evan Shinners travels the world to play Bach in venues ranging from pool halls to Carnegie Hall. Tonight, he'll play at the Dakota in Minneapolis.

Shinners is totally legit classically, having graduated from Julliard, but he also has a kind of schtick, having made a video of himself playing two pianos at his sides at once.

His goal is singular: to wrest Bach — a composer Shinners says is more jazz musician than classical — from the 'Tuxedo Tyrants' and get him into everybody's consciousness.

Shinners performs Bach as well as originals tonight at 7 at the Dakota Jazz Club.
