Minneapolis Mayor Rybak to run Generation Next
Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak will take over a Minnesota education advocacy group once he leaves office in January.
The organization, Generation Next, focuses on closing the educational achievement gap between white students and students of color. Rybak already was on its board.
That education gap is a "crisis in the community" and an "issue we cannot tolerate any longer," Rybak told reporters Wednesday.
Rybak will also teach a course at the University of Minnesota in the spring called "Mayor 101" where he'll explore the challenges of running a major city.
Rybak opted earlier this year not to run for a fourth term as mayor. Voters will pick his successor next Tuesday. He said he will continue in his role as vice chair of the Democratic National Committee until his term ends in 2016.
He did not rule out a future in politics but said he would be focused on the Generation Next job for the foreseeable future.
