Arne Carlson hits U of M on 'administrative bloat and excessive compensation'

Former Gov. Arne Carlson took to the Star Tribune this weekend to call out the University of Minnesota for "excessive compensation and administrative bloat."

"When I came into the governor's office in 1991, the president of the university made approximately $152,000," Carlson writes. "I made $112,000 -- for a gap of some $40,000. Today, the governor makes $120,000, and the university president is paid $610,000 -- a gap of $490,000."

He goes on to list other big salaries: Joel Maturi makes more than the president of the United States; the lead attorney for the university makes more than the Minnesota attorney general, and a total of 17 administrators make more than the vice president of the United States.

Gov. Carlson joins The Daily Circuit to discuss the rise in administrative costs at the University of Minnesota and what he thinks can be done to address it.
