by Brandt Williams, Minnesota Public RadioMINNEAPOLIS — Metro Transit officials say a car slid into a southbound light rail train Monday afternoon and then left the scene.
The driver called Metro Transit Police about 30 minutes after the incident, spokesman John Siqveland said in a statement.
An eyewitness on the train says the collision happened just after 1:30 p.m. as the train was passing by 42 Street East in Minneapolis.
Brittany Swanson said she saw a gold-colored Honda automobile travel underneath the security arm and strike the side of the last car of the train.
"I did see the front end of the car had hit the end of the first and beginning of the second train car and then spun around and the back end bounced off the second part of the train," Swanson said.
Swanson said the front end of the automobile crumpled in the impact. She and the other passengers have been transferred to another train.
Siqveland said no injuries were reported and said trains are running on schedule.
"The train suffered some damage, but left the scene under its own power and has been taken from service for assessment," Siqveland said.
