The debate over Hollywood's reliance on computer-generated images, or CGI, spilled over into The Daily Circuit on Wednesday. Host Kerri Miller stuck to her distaste for them. Stephanie Curtis maintained that they are fine when done well, as in "Titanic," and annoying when taken too far, as in "Oz The Great and Powerful."
Those are handy examples, because in each case we can go back to earlier versions from pre-CGI days and see what was possible with the special effects of the time. Here are clips from "A Night to Remember" (1958) and "The Wizard of Oz" (1939).
