ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Flanders Recorder Quartet, brought to Central Minnesota by the excellent Chamber Music Society of Saint Cloud, was actually only a trio when they performed in the resonant yet intimate Crypt Church of St. Mary's Cathedral in Saint Cloud... one of their members had suffered a medical emergency just before the beginning of their tour, and could not travel with them. Hopefully he is healing well and won't feel too bad about my saying that he was hardly missed, as the remaining three fellows adapted their program to the available instrumentation (recorders large and small...the littlest one about 12" long, the big double-bass recorder towering more than a foot above the head of its player).

Flanders is a lively center for recorder playing and building, so (not unexpectedly) this ensemble represented the best of the best. With charming music and an engaging personal delivery, three guys blew on their little wooden sticks and made for magical moments.
