Loon deaths may have been caused by invasive species, scientists say

Dead loons were staged for burial at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Michigan. On Oct. 16, 2012, volunteers Lynette and Dave Grimes discovered nearly 100 dead loons along a stretch of beach, likely the victims of Type E botulism. The couple buried the loons so other animals would not get sick from feeding on the carcasses. (Lynette Grimes)

At least 900 loons died last fall during their southern migration over Lake Michigan. Scientists believe invasive species could be the culprit.
Two scientists who are trying to find the solution join us to discuss the problem.
