Target to open 3 stores in Canadaby Martin Moylan, Minnesota Public Radio
ST. PAUL, Minn. — Target opens its first stores in Canada Tuesday.
The retailer will debut north of the border with three pilot stores near Toronto.
Target spokeswoman Donna Egan said, "Pilot Target stores are designed to help us get our feet wet, train team members, test systems but are absolutely open to guests, and we expect large crowds outside these three locations."
Target plans to open 24 stores in Canada by the end of the month and 124 by year's end.
Most of the Target stores will include groceries, a Starbucks coffee shop and an in-store pharmacy. Target has adjusted the merchandise selection in stores' to reflect Canadian tastes. That includes offering ketchup-flavored potato chips.
Most Canadians are well aware of Target, Egan said.
"Many of them shop our stores as they cross the border. And we heard loud and clear they wanted a true, authentic Target shopping experience in Canada," Egan said. "They didn't want 'Target-light.' And we've worked hard to deliver on those expectations."
