The CSL Tadoussac, which left the Duluth/Superior harbor on Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, sails on Lake Superior near Sault Ste. Marie on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013. Capt. Murray Latham (@LakerCaptain) tweeted that he's "seen worse days on Lake Superior in January." The ship's destination is Nanticoke, Ontario, on Lake Erie. (Photo courtesy Capt. Shannon and Jon Cliff

3

Waseca, Minnesota — Shannon and Jon Cliff stand outside their home in Waseca, Minn., on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013. The Cliffs spent $20,000 to repair the house after they found out it was sinking. As Minnesota's drought deepens this winter and the dry conditions that became more pronounced last summer have effectively been locked into frozen soil, some homeowners are dealing with problems left behind when the rain stopped last year. Sorting recyclables

5

Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA — Workers hand-sort recyclables at Waste Management's Materials Recovery Facility in Minneapolis. Minnesota was an early leader in recycling, but in 2008 the recycling rate flattened out at 41 percent of waste discarded, and that rate has even started to decline in the last couple of years. Cleanup after water main break

6

DULUTH, Minn. — Duluth Public Works and Utilities worker Scott Turner scoops a mix of mud and concrete into a dump truck Monday, Jan. 7, 2013 on Piedmont Avenue in Duluth, Minn. It's pretty easy to take drinking water for granted. Open the faucet and out it comes. But in recent days, major water main breaks in Minneapolis, Duluth and Sioux Falls, S.D. have highlighted the massive labyrinth of underground pipes that delivers water to homes and businesses -- and how the systems are showing signs of age. 400 Bar

11

It's the bar where Golden Smog, Zuzu's Petals, and Semisonic all began, and where Dan Wilson first debuted his big hit "Closing Time." It's the bar where Bonnie Raitt hung out while in the Twin Cities to record her debut album. It's where First Ave stage manager Conrad Sverkerson kicked out his first rowdy patron. And it's where Peter Ostroushko was playing pool when he got the call to go play on Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks. It's the 400 Bar--and after decades of hosting live music, the West Bank institution has closed its doors and vacated its ancient two-story building on the corner of Cedar and Riverside Avenues. St. Columba Church

12

Parishioners gather for a service at St. Columba Episcopal Church in White Earth, Minn. on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013. Music is a time honored part of worship in most religions. For many Ojibwe people in northern Minnesota, hymns are much more than an expression of religious devotion. They represent a unique piece of Ojibwe culture tribal that members are trying to preserve.
