3M shows off 84-inch touch-screen at Consumer Electronics Show

At the Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas, 3M is showing off a very large touch-screen.

3M produced an 84-inch prototype to show customers how far if can go in making big video displays that respond to touch.

"Over the years, people have really adopted the iPhone, iPad-style user interface," said David Henry, a 3M marketing manager. "And now, we've brought that to a much larger canvas. And what that really allows is multiple people to be involved. The application we were showing could be used by eight people."

3M expects museums, retailers, casinos and other customers will also be interested in the super-sized touch device.

The ultra-high resolution screen can distinguish between finger and palm touches, ignoring hands placed on the screen while responding to fingers. No pricing information for the monitor has been announced, but the company's smaller 46-inch touch-screens retail for about $6,500.

The Maplewood-based manufacturer is looking at developing even larger 100-inch touch displays.

"What we really wanted to do is demonstrate how far 3M can take a large screen with our current electronics platform," Henry said. "The key for 3M was really to showcase that our current electronics today can drive all the way up to that 84-inch."
