'38 Nooses' author discusses seminal event in Minn. history
by Tom Crann, Minnesota Public RadioST. PAUL, Minn. — This year marks the 150th anniversary of not only the battles of the Civil War, but one of the most important episodes in Minnesota's history.
In the summer of 1862, the U.S.-Dakota War raged for more than six weeks. When the fighting subsided, hundreds were dead, hundreds more were held hostage, and 38 Dakota warriors were hanged in a federal execution, the largest to this day.
Author Scott W. Berg has written a new book about the conflict, "38 Nooses: Lincoln, Little Crow and the Beginning of the Frontier's End."
The book focuses on the people involved in the conflict, which he considers an overlooked moment in American history.
