In Minnesota, Secretary of State Mark Ritchie is predicting this state's voters will again lead the nation in voter turnout, perhaps falling just shy of 80 percent voter turnout.

But voter turnout varies widely across the nation and one op-ed by Temple University law professor Jan Ting recently revisited the question of whether voting should be mandatory. It's something other nations do, including Australia, Brazil and Singapore. What about the United States?

Ting said one reason voting should be mandatory is that it will truly force our elected officials to actually represent the people they claim to represent.
