Microsoft unveiling Windows 8 today

Microsoft is unveiling Windows 8 today, a big gamble for the software giant. Windows 8 promises to be a dramatic overhaul of its well-known operating system.

Earlier this week, Apple announced the new i-Pad mini, though you might not have noticed that Apple made several other announcements about the original iPads, laptops and other products.

And with the holidays looming, there are several other gadgets coming down the pike: tablets from Amazon and Barnes and Noble, and Google has its own Nexus 7 tablet. And as if that's not enough, there's a new Wii game console coming out next month.

Helping us sort that out this morning is David Carnoy, an executive editor at CNET.com.
