Six injured when car strikes East Bank group

Police say six pedestrians sought medical help after being hit by a suspected drunken driver near the University of Minnesota campus over the weekend.

The pedestrians were crossing the intersection of Oak and Washington on Sunday afternoon when a car turning left struck them.

Minneapolis Police Sgt. Stephen McCarty said the light-rail construction and driver inattention could also be factors.

"Oftentimes the roads do change to make way for construction, so if you're not familiar with the area, or even if you are familiar with the area, it could be different from day to day depending on what the construction needs are," he said.

At least one of the pedestrians is still being treated at Hennepin County Medical Center, but McCarty said none of the injuries were life-threatening.

"There were some broken bones, nothing life-threatening, but three had left before our Minneapolis police traffic officer had arrived and transported themselves to Hennepin County Medical Center. The other three were transported after our officer arrived, via ambulance," he said.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrians was arrested.
