Hiawatha Ave. to be closed for work
Hiawatha Avenue will close in both directions later this week so workers can install new high-voltage electric lines under the road.
Xcel Energy is installing two 115 kilovolt lines, each a mile-and-a-half in length. The lines will go under 28th street, between a substation at Oakland Avenue and one on the east side of Hiawatha Avenue.
That means crews will have to dig up Hiawatha, also known as Highway 55. Crews will start cutting off access to the road at 9 a.m. Tuesday, and beginning Friday night, Hiawatha will be closed in both directions between Lake and 26th streets.
"Access to and from Hiawatha at East 28th and East Lake St. is going to be closed, and the northbound lanes are going to be shifted toward the inside of the roadway in order for them to prepare and get going on some of that work," said T.K. Kramascz, director of communications at the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Hiawatha Avenue is expected to reopen by Oct. 22.
During the closure, the following detours will be posted for motorists:
• Main detour: Use Hwy 62, I-35W and I-94.
• Local area detour: Use E. Lake Street, Cedar Avenue and E. 26th Street.
