Black Hills rumbling under buffalo roundup


CUSTER, S.D. (AP) -- The hills of Custer State Park are set to rumble as the hooves of about 1,300 buffalo thunder across the area during the 47th annual Buffalo Roundup.

Thousands of spectators were set to begin clogging the park's entrance at about 7 a.m. Monday in anticipation of the morning event. Entrance to the park is free for the day, during which cowboys and cowgirls will herd the buffalo into corrals.

About 300 buffalo will be up for auction Nov. 17, including 85 bull calves, 32 mature cows, 17 yearling bulls and 47 2-year-old Bred Heifers. The buffalo are bought to supplement or start herds or to be eaten.

More than 10,000 people are expected to watch this year's roundup, which promises a glimpse into the wild and wooly west of the past.
