St. Paul, Minn. — Dances with Wolves changed both Kevin Costner's career as an actor and director as well as the place of Westerns in American film history. Named to the National Film Registry as a "culturally and historically significant film", it also won 7 Oscars. Filmed in South Dakota and Wyoming, much of the dialogue was in Lakota with English subtitles. On FIF, we hear John Barry's Oscar winning score.
