President Lincoln's role in the US-Dakota War of 1862

Friday is the 150th anniversary of the first battle of the U.S./Dakota War of 1862. But the conflict between the Dakota people and the European settlers had been building long before the first shots were fired.

An important factor in that conflict was the U.S. government's Indian policy and how it was implemented by then President Abraham Lincoln. Dave Nichols, author of 'Lincoln and the Indians,' discussed this chapter in history with Morning Edition host Cathy Wurzer.
