Do cities change the weather?

by Cathy Wurzer, Minnesota Public Radio
LISTEN

How storms behave when they interact with a city is the subject of a new NASA-funded study. The project will explore how things like buildings and urban pollution can alter a storm's intensity and direction. Cities in the Great Plains, including Minneapolis and St. Paul, will be observed by a team of researchers from around the Midwest. One member of the team is University of Minnesota professor Laura Musacchio. MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke with Dr. Musacchio, who's a landscape ecologist, and who will help translate the conclusions the scientists make into useful planning for cities.
