Walker seeks flood disaster declaration

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Gov. Scott Walker is seeking a federal disaster declaration for three northwest Wisconsin counties due to damage from flooding last month.

Walker made the request Thursday for Ashland, Bayfield and Douglas counties as well as the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.

If approved, communities in the affected areas could qualify for a program that helps recover costs associated with fighting the floods, protecting residents and repairing damage.

Walker's office says no money would be available to homeowners or businesses because the damage incurred is not great enough to qualify. Last week Walker's office says federal officials verified more than $8.6 million in damage to public infrastructure.
