Republicans back repeal of health care without a replacement proposal

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans are mobilizing for an election-season vote to repeal President Barack Obama's health care law.

GOP lawmakers are lambasting the 2-year-old law as a threat to the nation's economic recovery. And they're predicting that some Democrats will join them in repudiating it.

A vote for repeal is set for tomorrow in the Republican-led house. All GOP members are expected to support it.

But the measure faces certain death in the Senate, where Democrats hold a majority.

In the run-up to the House vote, Democrats are seeking political advantage in the lack of a Republican alternative.

Republican officials say the general reluctance to sketch any sort of alternative stems from a desire to focus public attention on the health care law itself. It generally fares poorly in public polling, both nationally and in surveys of independent voters.
