Author Alexander McCall Smith is in town this week for a Club Book event put on by the Metropolitan Library Services Agency. He joined The Daily Circuit to talk about his new book "The Limpopo Academy of Private Detection," the latest installment in his acclaimed No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series.

"Part of the brilliance of this series (now in its thirteenth entry) is that what may seem like tiny cases expand into considerations of virtue, love, ambition, greed, and evil," wrote Connie Fletcher in the Booklist review. "And these meditations on life come as naturally as Precious looking up into the blue Botswana sky."

As a writer I've learned certain lessons. One of them is to be careful about how you put a view, and to bear in mind how easily and readily you'll be misinterpreted. I get accused of being cheerful. Generally speaking, I'd plead guilty to that, but writing is a spectrum. I think that the mistake is to assume that people who work at the positive end - who want to write about subjects which aren't riven with dysfunction and social pathology - the mistake is to assume that those people are ignorant of the dark side.

McCall Smith will be at the Club Book event Tuesday, June 19 at 7 p.m. at the Central Park Amphitheater, 8595 Central Park Place, Woodbury.
