Officers arrest Occupy protesters locked in home

Five members of the Occupy Homes MN group were arrested by the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office for obstructing officers serving an eviction order on a south Minneapolis home.

The sheriff's office says officers attempted to evict residents at the home Wednesday but were blocked by a large group of people. The officers returned at 4 a.m. Friday. Occupy protestors say they had locked themselves to structures inside the home.

Occupy Homes spokeswoman Martha Ockenfels-Martinez said the couple who live in the home was working with their mortgage company to avoid eviction.

"It's really unfortunate the way the sheriff's office responded and quite frankly quite shameful in that we've communicated through both our advocates through the county commissioner's office to let them know we are in negotiations with the bank, with the lender and the family," Ockenfels-Martinez said.

In a statement, the sheriff's office says it was required by law to take the action and no one was hurt. Occupy representatives say the protestors had minor injuries.
