Trayvon Martin family supporters rally today in Mpls.by Rupa Shenoy, Minnesota Public Radio
St. Paul, Minn. — Anti-gun violence groups plan another rally in Minneapolis to show solidarity with the family of slain Florida teen Trayvon Martin. It will be the third such rally in the past two weeks.
Protect Minnesota is among the groups organizing the event 6:30 p.m. today in north Minneapolis.
Heather Martens, the group's Executive Director, says the area disproportionately feels the effects of gun violence. She says there are victims like Trayvon Martin in north Minneapolis.
"What happened to Trayvon happens far too often in other parts of the country, too, especially in this neighborhood where so many people have been lost," Martens said. "Something can be done about it, and we need support — not just in Minneapolis, and not just in St. Paul, but from everywhere."
Martens hopes Martin's shooting will serve as a wake-up call to lawmakers to strengthen gun laws.
