Next month, five of the best Minnesota high school classical and musical theatre performers will do a showcase at the Fitzgerald Theatre in St. Paul.

One of the five at the Minnesota Varsity showcase will be determined by a public vote. The voting is open until Sunday.

This is the second year for the event, which is organized by our friends at Classical MPR on April 29.

This year there were 118 entries. That initial group was narrowed to 15 featured selections.

Daniel Gilliam from Classical MPR spoke to The Daily Circuit about this year's work. He said he was surprised by the number of high schools that have been interested in the event and submitted works during the two years of the showcase.

"I think that a lot of kids are interested in playing classical music," he said. "Their schools are providing them opportunities and I think their parents -- especially this generation of parents -- like the idea of their son or daughter playing an instrument and participating."

You can listen to the 15 finalists and vote at Classical MPR.
