Minot lawyer defends UND's Fighting Sioux nicknameby Cathy Wurzer, Minnesota Public Radio
St. Paul, Minn. — North Dakota's Supreme Court has set a March 2nd deadline for responses to a lawsuit over the state's law requiring UND to continue to use the Fighting Sioux nickname.
Last week, the state's Board of Higher Education filed the suit. It challenges a state law that says the nickname must be used while the state verifies a petition to keep the Fighting Sioux name for good.
Nickname supporters collected 17,000 signatures. They want a statewide referendum vote in June to decide whether or not the nickname stays.
Minot attorney Reed Soderstrom chairs the referendum committee. He talks with Cathy Wurzer about why he continues to support the "Fighting Sioux" nickname.
