Ojibwe language goes online

The University of Minnesota has just completed work on a new on-line dictionary of Ojibwe language and culture.

The dictionary has thousands of recorded Ojibwe words, and also links words to photos and documents in the Minnesota Historical Society collection.

the dictionary will be important for Ojibwe people, students and scholars, said Brenda Child, chair of the university Department of Indian Studies. She also expects many casual users to explore the website.

"The Ojibwe language is really everywhere in the landscape of Minnesota and in historic names," Child said. "As a heritage language of Minnesota, there is a lot of curiosity by the public and so I think this will be a good tool for the people who are curious about the various aspects of the heritage of Minnesota."

The online dictionary is the result of nearly two years of work funded by a $479,000 Legacy Fund grant.
