St. Paul, Minn. —
On his latest disc, composer Michael Torke presents two new pieces, "Fiji" and "Tahiti." They're both in Torke's distinctive style, where you may find echoes of pop and minimalism.
Tahiti is made up of eight sections, including "islands" like "Moorea" and "Bora Bora." Those might seem like welcome destinations in a Minnesota winter but Torke says that when you listen to Tahiti, he would prefer it if you didn't think about the South Pacific maybe more about "the perfume of leisure," in a location where "worries are few."
"Fiji" is a concerto for percussion but one in which the rhythm of percussion is neatly blended with melody from the orchestra. Like "Tahiti," this is beguiling music that swings.
