Mpls. toddler hit by stray bullet diesby Brandt Williams, Minnesota Public Radio
Minneapolis — A toddler who was hit by a stray bullet in Minneapolis on Monday has died.
Minneapolis police officials say the bullet passed through a north Minneapolis home Monday night and hit the 3-year-old boy, Terrell Mayes Jr., in the head.
Mayes was taken to North Memorial hospital, where he died late Tuesday morning, according his mother, Marsha Mayes.
Marsha Mayes said her son was going up the stairs when he was hit by the gunfire. He was the youngest of her four children. "My 3-year-old was my world," she said. "And now someone done took his life."
Police officials say they don't believe the shooter was targeting anyone in the Mayes home. They believe the bullet was fired from an alley about 120 yards away.
"From all indications at this time it appears the people inside the house were not the intended target of this gunfire -- in other words, a stray bullet," said Police Sgt. Stephen McCarty.
Mayes is asking the shooter to come forward, and Crimestoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information in the case. Police have no suspects in custody.
