Overall Mississippi River traffic was average

LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) -- The Mississippi River is closed to traffic for the year and the Army Corps of Engineers says traffic was about average.

Flooding caused the navigation season to start late this year and the warm fall caused it to end late.

Brennan Marine Operations Officer Kent Pehler tells Wisconsin Public radio there was a record value for commodities and exports shipped on the river this year.

Pehler says national droughts caused more of a demand for grain shipments from the region and cement shipments also increased. He says the amount of coal shipped on the river was down.
