More die of mesothelioma than previously reported
An ongoing study of workers in Minnesota's iron mine industry finds that more people have died of mesothelioma than previously reported.
Last year, the Minnesota State Department of Health reported 63 deaths. The study finds that 82 workers have died from the rare form of lung cancer, normally associated with exposure to asbestos fibers.
The state study has been going on since 2008, and includes over 46,000 people who worked in the Taconite industry in the state.
Dr. Jeffrey Mandel, the lead researcher from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, speaks with Minnesota Public Radio on the topic.
