Pedestrian, bicyclist deaths down in Minn.

Pedestrian and bicyclist deaths are down this year in Minnesota. But state public safety officials warn that darker days are coming, and that puts walkers and bikers at risk.

So far, there have been 18 pedestrians killed in Minnesota this year. That's down from 25 at this time in 2010. Three cyclists have died this year compared with eight at this time a year ago.

At this pace, safety officials say 2011 could be among one of the safest years for walkers and riders in the last decade. In 2010, there were 36 pedestrian deaths and nine bicyclist deaths in Minnesota.

In 2010, October was the deadliest month for pedestrians. Seven were killed.

As the days become darker earlier, officials are warning motorists to be aware of pedestrians and cyclists, especially around schools, campuses and urban areas.
