Western rootworm beetles climb on a corn stalk. The insects are developing resistance to genetically modified corn, which contains a protein that normally is deadly to the pest. Mora, MN, USA — Rhonda Vikla, 51, shows her folder of job applications waiting to be submitted. Vikla lives six miles outside of downtown Mora, but one major set back she faces is not being able to go into town every day due to high fuel costs. At the moment she can only afford driving to town once a week, and she says that will soon become once a month. Without going into town she is unable to use the computer and access the internet at the Minnesota Workforce Center in Mora. Bemidji, MN, USA — An early morning storm rolled through southern Beltrami County Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, knocking down numerous trees and power lines. Most damage happened in the Nymore area at the south end of Bemidji, where crews had to repair power lines and clear roadways.
