Remembering the St. Paul Colored Gophers 100-plus years later
"They came, they played, they conquered." That was how the Twin Cities African-American newspaper "The Appeal" summed up the hotly anticipated baseball series between the Leland Giants and the St. Paul Colored Gophers just over 100 years ago. The series wrapped up on this day in 1910, with the Giants beating the Colored Gophers 4 games to 1.
The teams were part of baseball's Negro League, since Major League Baseball was all-white in those days.
The St. Paul Colored Gophers have a fascinating history, and MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke about that with historian Annette Atkins at what used to be the Colored Gophers' home field.
