Regional Spotlight: The Arianna String Quartet
July 21, 2011
St. Paul, Minn. —
"I have recently completed a string quartet.....It is in g minor and not intended to bring trivialities to market."
Grieg finished his one and only quartet in 1878. Setting out to compose a masterpiece Grieg juxtaposed darkly resonant and muscular music, exploiting the lowest notes of the cello and viola, with soaring and tender violin melodies. It is a sonic and technical tour de force.
The Arianna Quartet performs this sprawling work from a concert recorded June 18th at the Madeline Island Music Camp. The Arianna Quartet and Grieg are featured in this week's Regional Spotlight.
Regional Spotlight airs Thursday at 3 p.m. on Classical MPR stations and web stream.
