Minnesota's budget
Simoneau discusses the 'third way'
by Tom Crann, Minnesota Public RadioSt. Paul, Minn. — Former DFL State Representative Wayne Wayne Simoneau discusses with MPR's Tom Crann the recommendations that were revealed this afternoon from a budget panel set up by former Gov. Arne Carlson and former Vice President Walter Mondale.
The panel recommends $2.2 billion in permanent spending cuts and $1.4 billion in new revenue. The plan includes a tobacco tax increase of $1.29 per pack, an alcohol tax increase and a Medicaid surcharge on hospitals.
Gov. Dayton has responded with a statement praising parts of the plan, but not in support of the 4 percent tax surcharge for all Minnesotans.
