St. Paul, Minn. — Taking their name from a short story written by Russian author, Tatyana Tolstaya, the Austin, Texas folk-rock band could literally be called a garage band - they recorded their debut album in a garage before being signed to Jagjaguwar records where they released four more critically-acclaimed records.

The members became friends in New Hampshire at the private boarding school Kimball Union Academy. They all left for college including frontman Will Sheff, who attended Macalester College in St. Paul. After graduating, they moved to Texas forming in 1998.
