Cub born to research bear Lily dies

One of the two cubs recently born to the Minnesota black bear made famous by the Internet has died.

Longtime bear researcher Lynn Rogers doesn't know why the cub, named Jason, died on Tuesday. His plans to do a necropsy were cut short when the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources confiscated the cub's body. DNR spokesman Chris Niskanen says Rogers doesn't have a salvage and collection permit to keep a dead animal.

The cub was one of two new cubs born to Lily over the winter in an Ely-area den where Rogers had placed a video camera that sent images of the bears online. The Duluth News Tribune reports the other new cub, Faith, appears to be in fine condition, as does Lily's one-year-old cub, Hope.
