Mayor of Twin Cities suburb dies of cancer

The mayor of one of the Twin Cities largest suburbs has died just weeks after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer.

Brooklyn Park Mayor Steve Lampi died Saturday night at his home surrounded by his family. The 56-year-old Lampi was elected to his third term as mayor last fall. He was also president and CEO of Bridgeman's Ice Cream, where he had worked since age 15.

KARE-TV says a little more than two weeks ago, Lampi told constituents about his surprise diagnosis and vowed to fight the disease. He provided no other details.

City Council member Mike Trepanier will serve as acting mayor.
