Minnesota companies monitoring unrest in Egypt

Minnesota companies with operations in Egypt are closely monitoring the unrest there.

Minnetonka-based Cargill says the political unrest is affecting all its normal business operations in the country.

Cargill has been active in Egypt since 1994 and has about 400 employees there. All but three of them are Egyptians.

In Egypt, Cargill trades grain, oilseeds and sugar and processes soybeans. Cargill is a majority shareholder of a soybean processing plant and grain terminal in the country.

In a statement, Cargill said employee safety is its priority and the company aims to return to normal operations as soon as possible.

Maplewood-based based 3M said it has some sales and marketing employees in Egypt. None is American.

The Carlson Companies says it has franchisees who operate hotels in Egypt. But the Carlson Companies doesn't own any hotels in the country.
