Concerning trends in HIV/AIDS
by Tom Crann, Minnesota Public RadioSt. Paul, Minn. — Today is World AIDS Day, which calls attention to the worldwide HIV/AIDS epidemic and the 33.4 million people estimated to be living with HIV and AIDS.
Here in Minnesota the number of new cases of HIV was up 13 percent last year. The reported 370 cases in 2009 is a 17-year high.
To find out more about what's driving that increase, we called Kris Ehresmann. She is Director of Infectious Diseases at the Minnesota Department of Health. And she says she's seeing some concerning trends regarding HIV/AIDS in the state.
