3 U of M plant scientists receive federal grants

Three University of Minnesota plant science researchers have won new research awards from the National Science Foundation.

The U of M projects announced Wednesday are among 28 new NSF projects awarded a total of nearly $102 million for genetic research to enhance agricultural productivity, grow nutritious foods and fight plant parasites.

Professors Adrian Hegeman and Jerry Cohen will receive more than $1.9 million over three years for their project relating to plant metabolism.

Nathan Springer and a fellow investigator at the University of Texas will receive more than $1.6 million over three years for their project involving corn genetics.
