Mpls. police on track to stay within budget in 2010

Minneapolis — Minneapolis police officials told members of the city council Monday that the department is on track to stay within its budget this year.

The department has overspent its budget in three of the last four years.

This year, the department has saved money by reducing the size of its vehicle fleet and by encouraging officers to cut back on idling their squad cars. Police officials say that reduces fuel consumption and wear and tear on vehicles.

The other big savings have come from salaries. Officials say so far this year, 17 officers have left the department and 11 more have agreed to take retirement incentives.

Officials said if 24 police officers leave by the end of next year, the department can avoid layoffs.
