One of Minnesota's most dangerous stretches of highway

St. Paul, Minn. — Since 2000, 25 people have died on a 24-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 14 between Mankato and New Ulm, one of the most dangerous stretches of roads in the state.
That's more than one fatality per mile in just over a decade and it's a fatality rate rate 94 percent higher than the state average.
The Mankato Free Press has been looking into why Highway 14 is so dangerous and why -- despite the danger -- there are no plans to improve the road.
Joe Spear edits the paper, which wrapped up a series of stories about Highway 14 in its print editions today. He joined All Things Considered host Tom Crann on the phone from Mankato.
