St. Paul, Minn. — Dessa first met members of Doomtree, the hip-hop collective she would leave slam poetry to join, when she literally moved in next door to them. Shortly after she befriended these new neighbors, she began collaborating with them.

However, while her contributions to Doomtree have been invaluable, she has since emerged as an artist in her own right. Her 2005 EP "False Hopes" and 2010 full-length "A Badly Broken Code" showcase her skills as a lyricist, rapper, and alto singer.

Dessa stopped by the Current booth at the Minnesota State Fair on MPR Day for a live performance.

Songs performed: "Mineshaft," "The Chaconne" and "Dixon's Girl."
