Final weekend for eastbound I-94 closuresby Dan Olson, Minnesota Public Radio
St. Paul, Minn. — The final weekend closure for a St. Paul stretch of eastbound Interstate 94 is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
Minnesota Department of Transportation spokesman Kent Barnard said eastbound 94 from 280 to Western in St. Paul will once again be closed for more resurfacing work beginning Friday night at 10 p.m. and will reopen early Monday morning.
"This weekend's work is the final closure for the east bound stretch provided we get good weather out there," Barnard said. "In subsequent weekends moving into August we will have the westbound lanes closed as we did the eastbound from 10 p.m. on Friday nights until 5 a.m. on Monday, and that'll be for resurfacing on the westbound lanes."
People planning on visiting the Flugtag event on Harriet Island in St. Paul this weekend will want to allow extra travel time. MnDOT spokesman Kent Barnard said the Flugtag organizers are directing people who want travel information to the MnDOT web page.
"We had talked with them and they're getting the word out as best they can through their website," he said. "They're expecting about 40,000 people down on Harriet island on Saturday."
This is the first year of a two-year long resurfacing project for Interstate 94 between St. Paul and Minneapolis. The resurfacing next year will be for the lanes from 280 to downtown Minneapolis.
