Man posing as Mpls. police officer scams elderly womanby Elizabeth Dunbar, Minnesota Public Radio
St. Paul, Minn. — A man claiming to be a forgery investigator for the Minneapolis Police Department successfully persuaded an elderly Richfield woman to withdraw nearly $10,000 in cash for him, police said Friday.
Minneapolis police said the man called the woman and explained he was investigating a case in which he had caught someone posing as the woman's daughter trying to withdraw cash from her account. He told her she could help him with the investigation by withdrawing the money for him to use in a sting operation.
The woman agreed and met the man outside her bank, police said. He showed her what looked to be a Minneapolis Police badge. After she withdrew the money, the man took it and left.
Police said while this type of scam is not new, they want the elderly and other residents to be aware of it.
Police said they suspect the Richfield woman is not the only victim in the case.
