Minn. health care spending hit $35B in 2008

The Minnesota Department of Health is reporting that health care spending in the state hit $35 billion in 2008, up from $33 billion in 2007.

Health care spending in Minnesota grew by 5.7 percent in 2008, down from 7.1 percent growth in 2007, but more than a percentage point faster than the U.S. as a whole.

Minnesota spends less on health care per person than the country as a whole. In 2008, per person spending in Minnesota was just over $6,700, compared to just under $7,200 nationally.

The report also projects that health care spending in Minnesota would have doubled in the next 10 years without Minnesota's 2008 health reform law.

That law aims to significantly slow the growth of health care spending, in part by offering consumers information to help them pick high-quality, low-cost providers.
