Health concerns don't deter raw milk enthusiasts
Minnesota's Department of Agriculture says the E. coli outbreak that sickened four people in the state this week "reinforces its decision" to crack down on illegal distributors of raw milk. Unpasteurized raw milk is legal in Minnesota, but only if you buy it directly from the farm. State officials say raw milk isn't safe. But raw milk enthusiasts are passionate. They claim it tastes better and is better for you.
MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke with one of those enthusiasts Dag Knudsen. He lives in southeastern Minnesota, just outside of Lake City. After the interview was over, Wurzer said on the radio that a spokesman for the Minnesota Department of Health says mathematical models indicate a strong likelihood that raw milk caused the E. coli outbreak. More testing is underway that could confirm that conclusion.
